"Investigating the Firmament's quarters...." Kilan repeated, thinking deeply. Honestly, none of this made sense. Why him and these others? Particularly himself-he was not that great with inducing magical power, so it made him curious.

On the other hand, this were highly respected magical figures. Surely, they had a good reason. Kilan was used to work and did things when they needed to be done for the most part-and certainly, almost everyone else seemed to want to go through with this. He nodded, finally done with assessing the situation.

"Alright then. I'll be doing my part." Kilan spoke, staring at the Meisters.

"If you want to stress the technicalities." Savas replied smoothly to Vesper, ignoring the others. "Regardless..." Without hesitation, he reached out to take the next amulet. Glancing at the blood-red stone for only a moment, he concentrated on the incantation. He'd never bothered to learn it by heart, but he knew it passingly, and the others reciting it made it fresh in his memory. Impatiently, almost talking too fast but keeping it in check, he repeated the spell.
Savas was unprepared for the almost overwhelming feel as the Amulet flashed green and he felt the inrush of power that accompanied the binding. After a second, he grinned tightly as he realized that was supposed to happen. After it subsided, leaving a faint sense of warmth, he held up his hand. With a thought, he started a tiny yet violent windstorm swirling in his palm. Invisible at first, it quickly picking up dust as he sent it swirling along the floor, past people's feet. Suppressing the urge to laugh exultantly, Savas sent it over the balcony with a flick of his hand, off toward the forest. It dissipated mid-air, dust falling until no signs it had ever existed remained. It had never been this easy before. That simple trick would have taken several minutes and wore him out before today. But now, he could call the wind with a thought. A glorious power at his command. Other might have preferred the flashiness of tossing lightning bolts and balls of fire, or the practicality of water, but the thief knew what was right for him. The sublime force of wind was just suited for him. Mostly silent, hard to detect, and able to break bones or delicately pull open a glass case and deliver the pendant inside to him with equal efficacy. Suddenly realizing he could quite possibly blow this entire group off the balcony if he wanted to, he concentrated to put a tight limit on his newfound power. Accidents might be...unpleasant.

Yesterday,

I watched three men die because one man sneezed in a room full of blood and shit and light.

Today,

three more men go in, cheap mops and each other's lives in their hands.

Yesterday,

I watched a man I admired gunned down for leaving a rose for a girl whose life was tattered by trauma she never deserved.

Today,

she doesn't remember, and three halls down I can hear her screaming.

Yesterday,

I watched a group of soldiers go down fighting against the corpses of comrades who'd died before them.

Today,

we test another sample, this time on children.

Yesterday,

I watched five men and women gunned down in an abandoned factory no one cares about.

Today,

it happens again and again. Every eleven seconds. Forever.

Yesterday,

I watched a man sit comfortably in a nice armchair, sipping scotch and laughing as he ordered a woman to simply stop breathing.

Today,

he gets the day off of work detail for good behavior.

Yesterday,

I watched hundreds of men and women in orange jumpsuits herded like animals into empty rooms that filled with gas and fire.

Today,

hundreds more are told they have a chance for a lighter sentence, and a chance to serve their country.

Yesterday,

I watched the world nearly die in a thousand thousand terrible ways. Sometimes we would have had time to scream.

Today,

I'm alive to write about it. You want happy endings? Fuck you.

You're alive to read it.

God help us all.

saying this in advance because it's relevant to planning RP things

I'm going to be out of state June 14-July 18. I officially have a job/internship thing/whatever you want to call it at the Lutheran Camp on mt. Petit Jean, so I'm leaving for there a day before the first week of camp starts (pretty sure I go a day early, anyway).
[12:46:06 PM] Firefly Vansalon: I'll have my phone, of course, but I'll never get a chance to be on except MAYBE sunday nights.
[12:474 PM] Firefly Vansalon: Monday-friday I'll be busy with the actual camp proceedings, saturday I'll be busy cleaning up (along with all the other staff) and sunday morning we'll be starting preperations for the next group.

Misty took the amulet from Kau and stepped back, quickly performing the binding ritual. As the influx of energy flowed into her from her connection to the amulet she maintained her calm expression. She waited for the others to finish accepting and binding to their amulets before saying or doing anything else.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tareya jumped and backed a bit away as Vespar addressed her. "I... I d-don't know..." She said, still eyeing the amulet. "It sounds d-dangerous and I'm not good with that... All I really k-know is Magic..."
Celestina's face reddened at the Meister's remark. ''How...'' Before she could muster a response, the topic had changed, and attention had shifted to Kau, and the now open box which he had been carrying. Inside the box were amulets, something that had, until this moment, seemed to be an object that would always be unobtainable. Now, one sat there, just waiting, inviting her to reach out and make it hers. Who, of all the people she'd met in life, didn't want an amulet to call their own? Nobody.
There was a catch, though, and that catch was this 'job'. Celestina looked at the amulets glowing in the box. A brief image of the lab echoed in her mind, if only for a split second. Some decisions just make themselves. She approached the Mesiters, drawing her gaze away from the box and towards Salif, one Celestina's soon to be employers, of a sort. ''I accept the contract.'' Maybe this will be just like old times at the barracks. She looked to see the others, who were in various stages of performing the binding ritual, and smirked. Some new toys this time round, though.
"Get it over with?" Salif repeated after Domus quizzically. "We're not forcing you to help us, you know."
"Only providing a very good reason," Kau added to that. He briefly glanced at Salif as he held out the box for the remaining amulets to be taken, Salif giving a near-invisible shrug in response.
-
"That's fine," Vesper replied to Tareya. "You don't have to agree to do this if you don't want to." He turned slightly. "You can go back to your books and acquire all the knowledge in the world but never put it into practice. If you want." He looked to the other three. "Anyway, here are some quick directions to the Lion. Take a left turn after exiting the Regels and keep going until you get to the Sun District. The inn is prominent enough in the district square that you can't miss it."
Hm, he did say we have a few hours, so no need to head straight to the Lion. Etzel thought, waiting to be ordered out of the balcony in case he couldn't leave yet for whatever reason. Maybe I should stock up on provisions. I'm running low on tinder- Wait, no, I can cast fire magic now, start campfires that way. I don't need to buy any water for the road, either, because I can just make it out of thin air, although some cups to hold it in wouldn't be a bad idea. My clay cup broke on the way here, and it looks like it'll be more than just me drinking, anyways. I hope August provides us with food or something, although I suppose we could forage should it be necessary. Although I don't look forward to foraging enough food for five people. Assuming we're even traveling very far. Etzel was far from rich, but he happened to have a little money on hand from killing a bandit that tried to get him to pay a "toll" to pass through a path on his way to the Regels, a toll much higher than most people could afford. I could use another whetstone, mine is nearly ground to dust from overuse.
My resume
Welcome to the Friend Zone, I am your tour guide today.
If you look to your left, you will see the Waterfall of Tears. These are the tears shed every day, by boys across the world. Do not drink the tears, because, in large amounts, they taste like salt water. This waterfall is our main source of income, as we sell these tears to witches interested in using children's tears in a potion. Remember this, it will be on the test.
If you look on your brochure, you'll see the amount of people who've escaped the Friend Zone permanently. Can't find it? Exactly.
On your right, you'll see our cardiologist, eating in the dining room located next to the generic-outdoor-place-to-play. I'll go ahead and tell you, although there's always an idiot or two who ignores me: No, he cannot fix broken hearts. He told me to warn you that the first... let's go with idiot, the first idiot who asks him to fix their broken heart will die from a heart attack.
Oh, we're arriving. Now, your sleeping areas are separated into male and female dormitories. You cannot be in the other genders' dormitory after dark, because the last thing we need is for everyone to be having nonstop sex. If you're homosexual, we ask that you refrain from nonstop sex. And if any of you masturbate, please clean it up; we don't want to.
This will conclude your tour of the Friend Zone.
A wall of text explaining why tanks don't fare well in Gauntlets:
The issue about tanks in Gauntlets is; they can happily mow down an army of regular units in regular gameplay. If their speed is on the low side, the enemies are generally wielding ridiculously heavy weapons anyways, putting them at nearly 0 speed. And your tank can probably just knock out any threat in a single blow anyways.
In the arena, that's not true.
In the arena, your enemy will happily pull out some silver weapons, and use them. The weapon triangle will only help slightly.That one point of damage isn't too important when the enemy is critting your for 60 in a single blow.
Your defense may be high, but the enemy isn't limited by such paltry things like "caps."
You see, the people in the arena are just various incarnations of Marcus.
Marcus is not limited by stat caps, he just chooses to hold back to give the enemy a chance.
However, in the arena, he lessens his restraint. He gives you but one concession: That he doesn't just pull out his wang and end your life. And he is not merciless, he lets you run. Of course, since when can tanks run? If Marcus wanted, he could chase you, but he feels bad for you, tank, who made the mistake of entering his vacation home.
Tareya continued to hesitate. Her antisocialness and fear of all that dying that was talked about conflicting with her want for more knowledge. Slowly her hand reached out towards the amulet that was left for her. "I... I... I... I... I... I..." She stuttered. "I... I... I'll g-go..." She took the amulet and quickly performed the binding ritual quietly.
"Pardon me." Kilan said, reaching towards the box, wrapping his fingers around one of the stones. It dawned on him how...careful he had to be with this stone. If there was a limited supply-or cut off, at least, then...this would be extremely valuable.
An Earth spell, he recalled. He had better make it a good one, as he knew that he wasn't that proficent in magic-he wanted to make it good so it could react,so he wouldn't embarrass himself, so he would actually get something done.
He thought for a moment, thinking of the most complicated one that he could completely memorize. Tilling, shifting...Ahah! Weed killer. Kilan tightened his grip on the stone, and readied himself, focusing as hard as he could.
"Arom Nahrea Imperium, Feritas Silenti Sepulchrum, Igasac Perdimit Ebulam." he chanted slowly, feeling magical energy rush through him for a split second and waited.
A gentle breeze filled throughout Kilan's head. He sighed contently-it seemed as if he was in another world. He was in the eye of a hurricane, the middle of a tornado. He fluttered slowly down on the ground, the wind carrying him. He snapped back to reality-had he just released magic? He wasn't really aware of what had happened that well. "Was...that it?"
"I, no, what.. No.. I was just..." Domus didn't finish his sentence, he grabbed one of the amulets and performed the binding ritual before anything more could be said. He could feel the magic rush trough his veins, which also cheered him up a little. "Ha, well.. we can't have a party without the main man joining," Domus finally answered the meisters confidently.
"Yes, it appears so," Kau replied to Kilan, chuckling at the visible swirl of wind that had enveloped Kilan for a moment. The other meisters had been perplexed as to why Kau had suggested sending a farm boy from the north on such a mission. Good thing Salif probably isn't familiar with agricultural spells, he thought. He wouldn't let me hear the end of it if he knew that that was a weed-killing spell. Kau was still confident that he had made a good choice— perhaps it was stereotypical confidence for the old meister, but it was confidence all the same.
"Quite so," Salif answered to Domus before launching into an explanation. "After leaving the Regels to seek out your mission, you will turn right and head to the Moon District of the Leitend. Go to the market area— there'll be merchant stalls and such everywhere— and you'll find an alleyway with a stream of water flowing through. There's a passage leading down some stairs, which is where I believe you can get a good start finding a Firmament hideout. You should try to remain unseen if possible."
-
"Oh?" Vesper murmured as he raised an eyebrow. Tareya was accepting the mission after all. Strange one, that girl. "Anyway, now that you're all bound up..." He chanted a very low, long chant, becoming louder as it went on, and a ripple traveled through the air, each of the amulets glowing once more as they were hit by it. "That's a magical lock of sorts," he explained immediately after, seeming visibly more tired after casting the spell. "... I don't know if August will have any cronies waiting with him, nor do I know if they have the proper spells or even what type of magic they might command, but we wouldn't want anyone attempting to forcibly evict your spirits from those amulets as a negotiation tool. They will be markedly harder for anyone to tamper with now... I'd keep them out of plain sight, by the way."
Karida nodded, tucking her amulet under her scarf. Thankfully, the glow was not bright enough to shine through it as long as she wasn't using a lot of magic. "Can we get going, then?" she asked.
"Indeed you may," Vesper answered. "Unless you have any questions, concerns, or whathaveyou, you're free to go... Oh, and don't even try to run away with those amulets, if you've got any funny ideas. Just don't."
"Shall we get going, then?" Aeronwen said, absentmindedly spinning her lightning-circlet. "I'll have to circle around to the Lion Inn, but it isn't too much out of our way, so I won't take long." She bowed to the Meisters, bid them farewell, and turned to leave, almost brimming with anticipation, nervousness, and excitement. On the one hand, this could be quite dangerous, and she didn't exactly handle herself well in dangerous situations. On the other hand, if she could get over that, this was a chance to test her new abilities. As she left the room, she let her ostentatious energy-crown fade away. Best not to attract attention. As she walked, she carefully clasped the chain of the amulet around her neck, securing it and then moving the pendant so it was hidden by her shirt. The glow was fading and unnoticeable through the cloth now, a fact Aeronwen was thankful for. She noticed random sparks occasionally appearing on her clothing, and concentrated to keep the static electricity in the air under control. As she left the Regels, she glanced back to make sure the others were following.
Yesterday,
I watched three men die because one man sneezed in a room full of blood and shit and light.
Today,
three more men go in, cheap mops and each other's lives in their hands.
Yesterday,
I watched a man I admired gunned down for leaving a rose for a girl whose life was tattered by trauma she never deserved.
Today,
she doesn't remember, and three halls down I can hear her screaming.
Yesterday,
I watched a group of soldiers go down fighting against the corpses of comrades who'd died before them.
Today,
we test another sample, this time on children.
Yesterday,
I watched five men and women gunned down in an abandoned factory no one cares about.
Today,
it happens again and again. Every eleven seconds. Forever.
Yesterday,
I watched a man sit comfortably in a nice armchair, sipping scotch and laughing as he ordered a woman to simply stop breathing.
Today,
he gets the day off of work detail for good behavior.
Yesterday,
I watched hundreds of men and women in orange jumpsuits herded like animals into empty rooms that filled with gas and fire.
Today,
hundreds more are told they have a chance for a lighter sentence, and a chance to serve their country.
Yesterday,
I watched the world nearly die in a thousand thousand terrible ways. Sometimes we would have had time to scream.
Today,
I'm alive to write about it. You want happy endings? Fuck you.
You're alive to read it.
God help us all.
Hey, this guide is now a thing. Check it out if you're interested in Roleplaying.
[12:45:45 PM] Firefly Vansalon: btw guys
saying this in advance because it's relevant to planning RP things
I'm going to be out of state June 14-July 18. I officially have a job/internship thing/whatever you want to call it at the Lutheran Camp on mt. Petit Jean, so I'm leaving for there a day before the first week of camp starts (pretty sure I go a day early, anyway).
[12:46:06 PM] Firefly Vansalon: I'll have my phone, of course, but I'll never get a chance to be on except MAYBE sunday nights.
[12:474 PM] Firefly Vansalon: Monday-friday I'll be busy with the actual camp proceedings, saturday I'll be busy cleaning up (along with all the other staff) and sunday morning we'll be starting preperations for the next group.
Kilan respectfully nodded at the Meisters, slipping on the amulet. "Thank you, Meister Kau, Salif. We'll do our best." He smiled, and without another word, started to follow Aeronwen. He was tempted to ask her something-but he kept quiet. 'I hope these guys know how to get around better then me...' He thought, looking around.
Etzel took out his sword and inspected it, before going to his pack and setting up his whetstone. It was a pain to make it portable, but at the same time, who else has been able to sharpen their sword on the balcony of Regels? He sharpened his sword until he was satisfied, which took about 15 minutes because it wasn't that dull in the first place, then put the whetstone back in his pack and sheathed his sword. "Let's go." Etzel said, tying his amulet around his ankle and putting the gem itself in his shoe. Damn, that's uncomfortable.
My resume
Welcome to the Friend Zone, I am your tour guide today.
If you look to your left, you will see the Waterfall of Tears. These are the tears shed every day, by boys across the world. Do not drink the tears, because, in large amounts, they taste like salt water. This waterfall is our main source of income, as we sell these tears to witches interested in using children's tears in a potion. Remember this, it will be on the test.
If you look on your brochure, you'll see the amount of people who've escaped the Friend Zone permanently. Can't find it? Exactly.
On your right, you'll see our cardiologist, eating in the dining room located next to the generic-outdoor-place-to-play. I'll go ahead and tell you, although there's always an idiot or two who ignores me: No, he cannot fix broken hearts. He told me to warn you that the first... let's go with idiot, the first idiot who asks him to fix their broken heart will die from a heart attack.
Oh, we're arriving. Now, your sleeping areas are separated into male and female dormitories. You cannot be in the other genders' dormitory after dark, because the last thing we need is for everyone to be having nonstop sex. If you're homosexual, we ask that you refrain from nonstop sex. And if any of you masturbate, please clean it up; we don't want to.
This will conclude your tour of the Friend Zone.
A wall of text explaining why tanks don't fare well in Gauntlets:
The issue about tanks in Gauntlets is; they can happily mow down an army of regular units in regular gameplay. If their speed is on the low side, the enemies are generally wielding ridiculously heavy weapons anyways, putting them at nearly 0 speed. And your tank can probably just knock out any threat in a single blow anyways.
In the arena, that's not true.
In the arena, your enemy will happily pull out some silver weapons, and use them. The weapon triangle will only help slightly.That one point of damage isn't too important when the enemy is critting your for 60 in a single blow.
Your defense may be high, but the enemy isn't limited by such paltry things like "caps."
You see, the people in the arena are just various incarnations of Marcus.
Marcus is not limited by stat caps, he just chooses to hold back to give the enemy a chance.
However, in the arena, he lessens his restraint. He gives you but one concession: That he doesn't just pull out his wang and end your life. And he is not merciless, he lets you run. Of course, since when can tanks run? If Marcus wanted, he could chase you, but he feels bad for you, tank, who made the mistake of entering his vacation home.
Quickly taking the last amulet on offer, Celestina performed the binding ritual. At first, she felt little change, but, as she turned to follow where the others were heading, something struck her, almost causing her knees to buckle. Something seemed to awaken in her body, a deluge of energy flowing through her veins, and the power felt all so...familiar. ''This is...'' Celestina trailed off as the force surged once more inside her, before ebbing away to the peripheries of her senses. ''...Wow.'' Oddly enough, she felt renewed by the whole experience, as opposed to her initial expectation of being unable to do anything else for the day when the force originally hit.
Looking at the emerald green stone giving off a faint glow, Celestina remembered that there were things to do at the moment, and the experimenting could come later. Giving a quick goodbye to the Meisters, she turned around to catch up with the others, placing the amulet carefully round her neck as she began to walk, chain barely visible due to the collar of her jacket, and the amulet glow wasn't going to be visible under two layers. Or at least, I hope it's not.
"Do we really need to walk all the way?" Domus complained after it was said where they had to go and he had made sure his amulet was not visible to the naked eye. It wasn't really that far though, but Domus didn't like walking trough the busy streets of the Moon District. Filthy beggars, thugs and cheap merchants, no it wasn't his place of fun. Yet many people referred the Moon District as the place to be in Leitend with the many pubs, food stalls and the always popular market area. Nevertheless, he didn't wait for an answer and just followed the rest outside.
